Set within a magnificent estate home built in 1913, this forgotten room went through a remarkable transformation. The client envisaged a moody, luxurious and inviting library with wall-to-ceiling shelving, comfortable chairs and functional lighting, a getaway space to put your feet up, read a book, drink a glass of wine – and chill with friends and family.
This was not an easy refurbishment due to the angle of the room, lack of natural light, small floor size and the built-in fireplace. However, we knew that making the most of the sash windows, high ceilings and modern heritage detail allowed us to capitalize on the overall design.
We colour drenched the ceiling, custom shelving, walls, window frames and skirting in the rich tones of Terra Rose, leaving the Japan black Jarrah floorboards and black doors for contrast. Layers of plum, olive, pale pinks and aubergines across the furniture, curtains and floor rug create a sense of calm and luxury. Layered, considered, enduring – this is a beautiful space.
And the final seal of approval? The clients' son proposed to his fiancé in the finished library. What an honour.
